Over the counter cold sore remedies can be costly and most are actually palliative in nature. This means they are meant solely to reduce the discomfort that comes from cold sores. There are a few home remedies that are simple and definitely worth a try before rushing out and spending at least eight dollars.
The simplest of these remedies is to apply buttermilk to the cold sore. This can speed the drying process and shorten the duration of the sore. Another great remedy is to add two teaspoons of red clover to one cup of boiling water. Steep the clover until the water has thoroughly cooled and then strain. Dip a clean cloth into the brew and apply for fifteen minutes several times a day. This remedy brings relief within twenty-four hours and can be made with items found in the pantry. One teaspoon of dried sage should be added to one cup of boiling water, allow this to brew for fifteen minutes. After straining the liquid add a teaspoon of ginger and a bit of honey for sweetness. Drink three cups of this 'tea' throughout the day. As always be sure of your allergies before you try this and keep honey away from infants. Anytime you feel a cold sore coming on, keep your hands and the area clean.
