Overview

The Intuitive Eating™ program is a diet book written by two dieticians that promises to be revolutionary. The program is based on their Ten Principles® which range from changing mentality to building confidence. The program is designed to help the dieter create a fresh way of looking at food. The goal isn’t dieting per se, it’s a new way of learning how to eat and behave around food. One of the things they try to eliminate is the guilty feeling after one has eaten unhealthy food. Their website offers support groups for dieters that attempt to help transition into the Intuitive Eating™ lifestyle. While their principles may sound easy to master, the authors of Intuitive Eating™ state it is actually a complex and difficult process. However,  once you change the way you view food, it will be worth it. And who are we to argue since it may definitely be said that many of us have a poor rlationship to food.

Ingredients at a Glance

The Intuitive Eating™ program is based on Ten Principles® including (in order of 1-10): Reject the Diet Mentality®, Honor Your Hunger®, Make Peace with Food®, Challenge the Food Police®, Respect your Fullness®, Discover the Satisfaction Factor®, Honor Your Feelings®, Respect Your Body®, Exercise®, and Honor your Health®.

Ingredients in Focus

The first principle of Intuitive Eating™ teaches that the diet hype is fallacious. There is no way to lose weight quickly or even permanently, and we will gain it all back unless we learn how to change the way we perceive food. The second principle teaches that dieting only produces a reaction that causes us to eat out of control, and we should eat on a regular basis to avoid this.

The third principle teaches that we should stop fighting the urge to eat, and eat. Convincing the mind that eating is evil leads to many other problems. The fourth principle teaches that one should feel indifferent whether they eat a food percieved to be bad or good.

The fifth principle teaches that we should stop eating once we are full. Sixth, once we feel satisfied with our meal, we should stop eating. Seventh, the book teaches that food is not a tool to cure emotional issues, and thinking this way this leads to several problems.

Next, the authors teach that one should respect their body type. They argue that not every individual is meant to be lean and slim. The ninth principle is Exercise®. The book sees the importance of exercise when trying to lose weight. Moreover, the authors encourage rigorous exercise. Finally, Intuitive Eating™ argues that our health is of supreme importance, and encourages the individual to take care of the body.  We have no argument with any of these principles – in fact they sound just right.

Positives

• It’s a revolutionary way of dieting that doesn’t have specific ingredients, but a new way of thinking.

Negatives

• One may not have the mental fortitude to change their lifestyle after reading a book.
• Often supplements are an excellent source of aid while dieting, but this book doesn’t suggest them.
• There is no proven science that changing the way one views food will help them arrive at a healthy weight – but it makes sense.

Final Thoughts

The Intuitive Eating™ book is a new way of looking at dieting; in fact, the authors prefer not to call it dieting, but rather a lifestyle change. The book purports to help the reader establish a new relationship with food. In other words, the writers attempt to change the way we eat and how we feel about eating. The authors strongly encourage exercise and overall health as part of this paradigm shift. They offer a support group for readers who are struggling through the program, and freely admit that the shift is not simple.

This may be a welcome change for so many who struggle with their relationship with food. don't forget too, that there are weight loss supplements available to help.  Look for a product with proven ingredients to burn fat, and one to control the appetite.
